The Export Development Board (EDB) has stepped up efforts to expand Sri Lanka\u2019s export base by strengthening the export readiness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the North Western Province through a series of export-oriented business clinics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The programmes, organised by the EDB\u2019s North Western Provincial Office in collaboration with District and Divisional Secretariat offices, attracted more than 100 participants from the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts. The clinics were held on September 11 and October 16, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The initiative aimed to help regional entrepreneurs overcome export-related challenges, improve their understanding of export procedures and requirements, and develop the business capabilities needed to access international markets. Participating entrepreneurs represented a range of sectors, including coconut and coconut-based products, spices, food and beverages, ornamental fish, cut flowers and foliage, textiles and apparel, and handicrafts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Kurunegala programme was attended by District Secretary D. M. K. C. Dissanayake and Additional District Secretary (Lands) Niluka K. Jayawardhana, while the Puttalam programme was conducted in collaboration with the Chilaw Divisional Secretariat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials from the Inland Revenue Department, Industrial Development Board, Small Enterprise Development Division, National Enterprise Development Authority and financial institutions provided one-to-one advisory services to participating entrepreneurs. The consultations addressed specific business and product development requirements while providing guidance on available institutional support to improve competitiveness and export preparedness. The clinics also connected entrepreneurs with service providers offering export-quality packaging and labelling, logistics, certification, testing and inspection services \u2014 essential requirements for businesses seeking to enter and sustain themselves in overseas markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The initiative is significant as expanding the participation of regional SMEs in international trade could help diversify Sri Lanka\u2019s export base, create new business opportunities and spread export-led economic growth beyond established commercial centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The EDB plans to conduct follow-up activities to identify individual business needs, determine areas requiring further assistance and facilitate appropriate support. The continued engagement is expected to help entrepreneurs translate the knowledge gained through the clinics into practical improvements, strengthening their ability to meet international market requirements and contribute to the country\u2019s overall export growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
