Tea production sees a marginal rise in October
Sri Lanka’s tea harvest experienced a slight uptick in October 2025 compared to the previous year, according to provisional data from Forbes & Walker Research.
However, this overall gain masked varying performances across the different growing elevations, with only the Low Grown segment reporting an increase.
The total crop for October stood at 21.78 million kilogrammes Mnkg, a marginal rise of 0.50 Mnkg over the 21.28 Mnkg recorded in October 2024.
While the overall monthly figure improved year-on-year, production in the High Grown and Medium Grown areas actually saw a decline.
The Low Grown segment bucked the trend, showing a 5.96 rise to 14.34 Mnkg, making it the sole segment with positive growth.
For the year to date, cumulative production for January to October reached 220.97 Mnkg, an increase of 2.82 Mnkg compared to the 218.15 Mnkg during the same period in 2024.
All elevations showed gains over the 2024 corresponding period.
Forbes & Walker Research highlighted that while the overall cumulative figures show a modest recovery, the shifting output at the elevation level indicates an ongoing period of uneven growth for the industry.
