ICAO to support country’s civil aviation sector advancement

Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Tao Ma stressed that the ICAO is ready to provide all necessary support for the advancement of the civil aviation sector in the country.

He made these remarks during his recent official visit to Sri Lanka. He emphasized that Sri Lanka has a huge potential for the advancement in the civil aviation sector and therefore the ICAO will support Sri Lanka’s civil aviation industry as well as the upcoming international audit. Besides, Ma expressed his agreement to provide ICAO technical assistance to Sri Lanka attending a special meeting with the Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of Sri Lanka Sunil Jayaratne, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of CAA Captain Daminda Raika Wella and stakeholders from the public and private sectors involved in the civil aviation sector and the staff of the CAA.

Ma also said that all necessary support will be provided for the technical guidance and empowerment needed to successfully face the international aviation audit planned to be conducted by ICAO targeting Sri Lanka in the future. It is noteworthy that Sri Lanka has been commended for its excellent efforts to ensure that the civil aviation industry is safe, secure, efficient and sustainable, while ensuring that its benefits are shared with the public.

He expressed his appreciation for the National Aviation Professionals Program (NGAP – Sri Lanka) currently being implemented to educate school and university students and the youths about future opportunities in the aviation sector, in line with the rapid growth achieved by the local and global aviation sector, in order to prepare youths for the future by aligning the human resources required for the civil aviation sector. The CAA of Sri Lanka has been implementing this programme for consecutive fifteen years.

The ICAO has appointed Ambassadors to regionally promote the aviation industry of its Member States for the next two year period under the “ICAO Global Champion Ambassadors” programme, which was introduced for the first time. The appointments were made after considering nominations from 193 member states.

Accordingly, Attorney-at-Law Rehan Wanniappa was appointed as the ICAO Global Champion for the Asia and Pacific region, while Prahath Kularathne and Dr. Upuli Sachtra Warnakula were appointed as ICAO Global Ambassadors for
Sri Lanka, received their letters of
commendation from Tao Ma.
