CanCham SL targets CAD 5 Bn FDI with five-year strategic plan
The newly established Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Sri Lanka (CanCham SL) has formally commenced its operations with the approval and support of Global Affairs Canada. The Canadian High Commissioner to Srí Lanka serves as the Patron of CanCham SL, further reinforcing the Chamber’s commitment towards strengthening bilateral and regional economic cooperation.
Speaking to media on Friday (15), CanCham SL Board Member Mohamed Hameez said they were in the process of developing a solid five-year strategic plan aiming at over CAD 5 billion Canadian investment in the next 5 years. CanCham SL has been established as a dynamic platform to promote trade, investment, tourism and strategic business partnerships between Canada, Sri Lanka and the wider Indo-Pacific Region. The Chamber aims to facilitate stronger commercial engagement while supporting sustainable economic growth and regional collaboration, he said.
Meanwhile, CanCham SL entered a historic milestone with the formal signing of a landmark MoU alongside all Canadian Chambers across the Indo-Pacific region, on April 16, 2026, in the presence of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The agreement signifies a new era of collaboration among the Canadian Chambers of the Indo-Pacific, with a strong focus on strengthening trade and investment ties, enabling strategic resource sharing, enhancing regional cooperation and fostering knowledge exchange across member chambers and markets. During the meeting PM Carney had announced Canada’s commitment of CAD 0.5 trillion (CAD 500 billion) towards strengthening Canada’s economic relationship with the Indo-Pacific region over the next decade. Subsequently Canada has already established a sovereign wealth fund with an allocation of CAD 25 billion to support long term strategic and international economic initiatives in the Indo-Pacific region. The Chamber intends to work closely with business leaders, diplomatic missions, government institutions, investors and industry stakeholders to create meaningful opportunities for Canadian and Sri Lankan enterprises.
The primary objectives of CanCham SL include: promoting bilateral and regional trade and investment, facilitating Canadian business expansion into Sri Lanka and the Indo-Pacific Region, encouraging tourism promotion and hospitality partnerships Supporting business networking and strategic alliances, providing business facilitation and market connectivity services, promoting innovation, technology transfer and knowledge sharing, supporting SMEs, entrepreneurs and startup ecosystems, strengthening regional economic cooperation through the Indo-Pacific network and facilitation for Canadian Companies.
